Hainan Institute of Tropical Agricultural Resources, was known as Breeding Station of Three-line Hybrid Rice of Hainan Li & Miao Minorities Autonomous State of Guangdong Province founded in 1975. This is the first hybrid rice breeding organization in China, which was approved and established by the official Tropical Rice Institute of Hainan Li & Miao Minorities Autonomous State of Guangdong Province, and sited in the west of Yacheng Town, Sanya City, Hainan Province.

In 1976, approved by Hainan Li & Miao Minorities Autonomous State of Guangdong Province, it was named “Tropical Rice Institute of Hainan Li & Miao Minorities Autonomous State of Guangdong Province”, which was division level institution with allocated 33 faculty under the leadership of Hainan Li & Miao Minorities Autonomous State.

Since Hainan Island was upgraded to be a Province in 1989, the institute was authorized to be renamed as Hainan Institute of Tropical Agricultural Resources (HITAR), which was a full funding institution of division level directly subordinate to science and technology department of Hainan provincial government, with 33 technical personnel.

In 1999, the present Director, Dr Xuanjun Fang, Deputy Director of Biotechnology Research Center of CAAS, was appointed to be as the fifth director of the HITAR. In 2000, Hainan Biological Engineering Association was established, to became its affiliated units.

In 2001, “Key Laboratory of crop molecular breeding in Hainan Province” was set up in provincial resources institute, which was approved by the Science and Technology Department of Hainan Province. This was the first provincial key laboratory specialty in “molecular breeding” in China.

In 2003, Hainan Institute of Tropical Agricultural Resources founded the science and technology journal of “Molecular Plant Breeding”, and sponsored by Hainan Institutes of Biotechnology. In 2007, Hainan Institute cooperate with Bayer crop science company to establish “Hyde transgenic plant test facility”.

The current architecture of the institute was formed in 2002. Since July of 2002, HITAR was transformed to be an independent inventor and service provider, and the transformed institute would still follow the running model of state owned NGO but need to self balance own revenue and expenditure. At this time of 2008, HITAR was registered to be as a limited company in the Bureau of Industrial and Commercial Administrative of Sanya Government, and was renamed as Haide Institute of Tropical Agricultural Resources Ltd. Hainan. From then on, Hainan Institute of Tropical Agricultural Resources would virtually become a kind of platform with the functions of facilities, materials, technologies and industrializations based on its own knowledge, discoveries and technologies.
